Tomorrow I am going to leave for Myanmar. As only US dollar cash can be used principally for payment in Myanmar, you have to obtain US cash dollar before going to Myanmar. You cannot pay by Japanese yen, traveler's check or credit card there. I heard that the purchase of foreign currencies by a Japanese credit card JCB had begun at the
Travelex. This service was available as of 28 Sep. 2005 at the branches of Yokohama in Kanagawa, Roppongi, Southgate Shinjuku, Hibiya, Yaesu, Tokyo City Air Terminal and Akasaka Twin Tower in Tokyo. I visited the Yaesu Brach this time.

I had already had some US dollars. So, I purchased 300 dollars only. Japanese yen dropped a little bit against US dollar on 28 Sep. One US dollar cash was sold at 116.19 yen there. I bought 300 dollars at 34,857 yen.

You can buy foreign currencies by credit card at the same exchange rate of that by cash. No additional fees are charged, either (Refer to red arrows). In addition, no interest is charged if you settle the bill at the next payment because this transaction is not a loan but shopping. I think this service is very beneficial. The service is available by JCB card only at present.

I left for Mawdinsoun (Mawdin Point) to see the Full Moon Festival. Mawdinsoun is located at the most southwest point of the Ayeyarwady Delta (Irrawaddy Delta) facing both the Bengal Bay and the Andaman Sea (
refer to the Google Maps). It is about 100 km away south from Pathein. Foreigners must get a special permission to go to Mawdinsoun in advance. You also have to check the schedule of the festival in advance because it varies depending on the full moon day every year. Only during the festival, special ferries sail between Pathein and Mawdin. The ferry departed from Pathein early in the morning. I found outlets in the cabin. I played with my computer with a power supply connected to the outlet, drinking Mandalay Beer. And then the ferry arrived at Mawdin in the evening.

You can see lines of booths along the beach. At the side of the beach there were a lot of restaurants most of which also offered VCD karaoke. Many people were singing there. Blackout often occurs in Myanmar. Such a device is always intermediated between outlets and air conditioners and refrigerators integrated with compressors. Once a blackout, the device will start transmitting electricity five minutes later after electricity resumes. But the device never lets an air conditioner turned on because timer count starts from zero again during blackout occurs continuously every 2 or 3 minutes.

I stayed in Grand Hotel (
Lonely Planet
, No. 5 on the map in p. 203). It was not bad, but electricity was available only from 6 pm to 6 am and unavailable from 6 am to 6 pm in all the accommodations in Chaungtha. As the air conditioner was not available in the daytime, either, you had to swim in the sea if it was hot. But the availability of electricity might be improved because recently a small generating station from wind power and solar power was built.

KCR, from Wan Chai, take the
MTR Island Line for Sheung Wan, change to the
MTR Tsuen Wan Line for Tsuen Wan at Admiralty, and then change to the
MTR Kwun Tong Line for Tiu Keng Leng at Mong Kok, and finally get off at Kowloon Tong. At Kowloon Tong we could change to the

At Kowloon Tong we had the Octopus cards refunded. Then we bought tickets of the
KCR East Rail. The first class was comfortable. At Lo Wu we proceeded to the Hong Kong immigration for embarkation followed by the China immigration for disembarkation. Those passport controls were smooth because those for foreigners were located separately from those for Chinese.

First of all we headed to our hotel after entering China. Our hotel was
Best Western Shenzhen Felicity Hotel. After checking in the hotel, we visited the Lo Wu Shopping Mall. You should ask discount in this mall. I found some famous brands¡Ç goods and DVDs surprisingly cheap though I bought none of them. However, we walked around bewaring of surrounding people because it was said that there were a lot of pickpockets in Lo Wu. Tours of Shenzhen from Hong Kong are safer. Anyway, I want to visit Shenzhen again to see new subway lines
Shenzhen Metro (Chinese only).

It was a one-day trip to Macau from Hong Kong this day. You usually take a
TurboJET ferry to go to Macau from Hong Kong. You can travel between Hong Kong and Macau whenever you like owing to high frequency and 24-hour availability of the
TurboJET. After moving from Wan Chai to Sheung Wan by
subway MTR, we reached the Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal. We purchased our tickets by a credit card. It took about one hour to sail to Macau. At the passport control of Macau, I could enter Macau free of charge, but Namaiki san from Mongolia needed to pay HK$100 to enter.

Macau used to be a Portuguese territory. That is why the official languages are still Portuguese and Cantonese in Macau. You will see many bilingual signs and displays of Portuguese and Cantonese there. I can understand Portuguese partially because of its similarity to Spanish that I had studied before. So, I could enjoy Macau very much because I could read and understand what they meant by their Portuguese and Chinese characters. Namaiki san had also studied Spanish in a language school. The school promoted the Spanish course by telling that you could go to Macau if you studied Spanish. But Spanish is not spoken in Macau. She quitted the school one year later. Anyway I had never met Portuguese speaking people in Macau.

The currency of Macau is pataca, but they accept also Hong Kong dollar there. If you pay by HK dollar, they give you change by HK dollar. Cashiers have both Macau pataca and HK dollar for change in Macau. At shopping at a department store New Yaohan, the cashier gave me change for one pataca though I paid by HK dollar. I still keep it as a souvenir because it cannot be accepted in Hong Kong. I may use it in a casino next time.

On the way back, I stopped by New Yaohan to buy Portuguese wine named
Vinho Verde. It is white wine with light body suitable for sea foods.
Vinho Verde means green wine probably because its color is yellow to green. There I found many Portuguese wines that I had never met in Japan. But I encountered a problem. We were going back to Hong Kong. Only one liter of alcoholic beverage is duty-free per person in Hong Kong. In addition, tax for alcoholic beverage is so expensive in Hong Kong when dutiable. It is said that the tax rate might be 60%. So, I purchased only 2 bottles of wine that would be duty-free for two persons. Then we returned to Hong Kong by
TurboJET.

I have found that you can avoid the Hong Kong Customs if you take a
TurboJET to sail directly to the Hong Kong International Airport from Macau. Next time I will buy a lot of Portuguese wine in Macau before going directly to
the Hong Kong International Airport. I know there is
an international airport in Macau. However, there are no direct flights from Japan. You have to transit at Taipei etc. when going from Japan.

We moved from Beijing to Hong Kong this day. We decided to fly from Beijing to Shenzhen followed by
TurboJET ferry from Shenzhen to Hong Kong. Before coming to Beijing, Namaiki san needed to buy her air tickets in Ulaanbaatar. The air tickets from Ulaanbaatar cost over US$500 for Hong Kong via Beijing and less than US$400 for Shenzhen via Beijing. The difference between those prices was over US$100 while the round-trip ferry tickets cost much cheaper. This is why we travel to Hong Kong via Shenzhen. I purchased my air tickets for Shenzhen from a travel agency located on the first floor of
Jinglun Hotel that we stayed in. The round trip tickets cost me around RMB 2,300.

We headed for
the Beijing Capital International Airport by taxi after checking out the hotel in the morning. I had a bottle of water in my carry-on bag, but the security check found the bottle at the airport. The security officer opened the cap to sniff the liquid in the bottle. She gave me back the bottle because it was not alcohol. If it were alcohol, you would have to give up carrying on it at all the airports in mainland China.
The flight CA1303 was almost full. The plane arrived at
the Shenzhen Baoan International Airport in three hours. I found that less than 50 people including us were waiting for their baggage at the baggage claim though the total number of the passengers must have been around 300. I guessed that most passengers might have carried on all of their baggage. Later I heard that most Chinese people never checked their baggage at airport because they believed that their checked baggage would be stolen.

After we picked our baggage up, we proceeded to the
ferry counter. The
ferry counter was located just before the exit nearest the bus stop of the shuttle bus for the ferry terminal. The one-way ticket for Hong Kong cost around RMB 180. A shuttle bus came to the airport in 10 minutes. It took about 10 minutes from the airport to the ferry terminal. We boarded the ferry after embarkation at Chinese passport control.

Our
TurboJET ferry was so comfortable without rolling. The ferry arrived at the Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong in one hour. Soon after disembarkation at Hong Kong passport control, we withdrew some Hong Kong dollars from an ATM. We decided to go to our hotel by
subway MTR because our hotel
the Empire Hotel Hong Kong was located near the MTR station Wan Chai. There was an underground connection between the ferry terminal and the MTR station Sheung Wan. We purchased Octopus Cards before taking subway. The Octopus Card is a rechargeable contactless IC transport card of Hong Kong. Finally we could get to our hotel after several-minute walk from the Wan Chai station.

To attend a tour is the best way to go around sightseeing spots efficiently because transportation is reserved. The JTB is one of the most useful travel agency for Japanese tourists. A Beijing branch of the JTB is located on the basement floor of
the Hotel New Otani. I applied a tour there yesterday. The tour had to include the Palace Museum and the Great Wall for us.

This is the Ta He Dian. The central steps were exclusively for the emperor. Ordinary people just like me could never use the central steps. Though this building was so great, there was nothing valuable. As most portable and valuable things were carried to Taipei, only heavy or cheap things remained in Beijing. I found a sundial there. Then I also found some Mongolian letters besides Chinese letters on it. I asked Namaiki san from Mongolia what the Mongolian letters meant. She answered that they meant a horse, a sheep etc. I got to understand that those Mongolian letters indicated the time of horse (11 am to 1 pm), the time of sheep (1 pm to 3 pm) etc. as well as the corresponding Chinese letters. In addition, I found some bilingual signs of Chinese and Mongolian on the gates. I asked Namaiki san what they meant, but she could not understand them well because they might be linguistically too old to understand. I wondered why there were bilingual expressions of Chinese and Mongolian in the Purple Forbidden City.

CORRECTIONIn this article I correct the above-mentioned part regarding the bilingual expressions of Chinese and Mongolian as follows: The language besides Chinese that I saw in the Purple Forbidden City was not Mongolian but Manchu language of the era of the Qing Dynasty. Manchu letters originated from Mongolian letters. A horse is
morin in Manchu language and
mori in Mongolian. I suppose that she could read and understand it because both letters and words for a horse were compatible.

Myanmar and Mongolia...These countries do not seem to be related to each other. But there is a coincidence between them. Myanma currency is kyat and Mongolian currency is tugrug. Either 1,000 currency units are almost equivalent to US 1 dollar as of 2005.

There is another mysterious thing between Myanmar and Mongolia. Focusing on their numeric letters, letters for "1000" are very similar between Myanma and Mongolian. I think that it must be a mysterious coincidence as Myanmar is quite far from Mongolia.

Japanese nationals have to obtain Myanmar visas before entering Myanmar. Application for a visa shall be made with 2 copies of the application form with photos, one copy of the report of arrival with a photo and your passport. Then the embassy issues a seal-type visa. One copy of the application form and one copy of the report of arrival are stapled to the page of the visa (staple removed temporarily to take a photo.) It is the easiest to ask a travel agency to apply a visa for you. You can make an application by yourself, too. Some travel agencies offer service of an arrival tourist visa to be issued at Yangon International Airport. However, as this service is not well-known yet, you have to explain such service to some airline staff at the check-in counter of the airport when they ask why you did not obtain a Myanmar visa.

This is Japan's tallest building "
the Landmark Tower Yokohama." It is a 70-story building and 296 m tall. The elevators going up directly to the Sky Garden (an observatory floor) on the 69th floor are the fastest in Japan and their maximum velocity is 750 m/mim. Those elevators used to be the fastest in the world before the
Taipei 101 was opened in Taipei, Taiwan.

This is
Chikyunoarukikata
which is a guidebook in Japanese. I think it is the only standard guidebook of Myanmar written in Japanese. The total pages are 213 which are less than that of
Chikyunoarukikata Thailand
. But there are no other choices than that. This book is well illustrated and easy to use.

Language is important in traveling abroad. This is a book for a Japanese to wish to study Myanmar language. The series of this book is well illustrated and can be used by pointing out a picture to communicate with someone instead of talking to her or him. Myanmar language uses its unique letters and has the same grammar structure S+O+V as that of Japanese. But Myanmar language has voiced and unvoiced sounds which are very difficult for Japanese. I think I will use this book by pointing out pictures before I can pronounce well.

It was not so easy to make the settings for Yahoo! BB Mobile before access the Internet. First of all, apply for an ESS-ID and a WEP key in advance. Then, in the setting of wireless LAN enter the ESS-ID, enable data encryption, choose hexadecimal for the key format and 40 bits or 10 digits for the key length and enter the WEP key to establish the wireless LAN connection. Finally enter your Yahoo! ID and password in the login page shown here to access the Internet. You do not have to make the wireless LAN setting again once it is completed. Afterwards all you have to do to access the Internet is log in with your Yahoo! ID and password. But it takes time to make the setting for the first time. I think the secure wireless LAN provided by Yahoo! is good. But it may be a hard job to make the setting of the wireless LAN, which cannot be completed unless you go to the lounge, within a short time during your stay in the lounge. I hope easier settings.

I went to the gate for my flight for Chitose/Sapporo. But I found my flight overbooked. This was my first experience of overbooking in domestic flights. An NH staff called somebody who could be a volunteer to give a seat. On this very rare opportunity I applied for a volunteer. The NH staff asked me which I preferred, 10,000 yen or 7,500 miles. Of course, I chose 7,500 miles because 10,000 yen could not buy 7,500 miles. That is why I flew to Sapporo by the next flight.
